Hello

My name is Matthew Hinkel

Welcome to my personal expression

A building is a collection of spaces used for a variety of human interaction and activity. The spaces can be transformed, adapted, and even expanded. If developed with thought and care, they can create something that is greater than the sum of thier parts and can affect the way humans live in an extraordinary way. In this context, the development of a building is not unlike the development of a person.

I try to approach everything in life with open-minded optimism. My favorite people seem to be fiercely competitive but also thoroughly compassionate. I value loyalty and respect more than most attributes, though I consistently rely on humor to keep a healthy perspective. I love cities for their cultural diversity, architectural brilliance and their tendency to bring people together - both emotionally and tangibly.

I consider myself a real estate investor, economist, film director and producer, web designer, graphic artist, carpenter, athlete and photographer. By trade, I am a finance professional, but I consistently use some of my right-brained talents in my seemingly left-brained career. I apply design principles everyday to pitches, presentations and reports. The way an idea or concept is visualized has an impact on the way people react to it. This essay reflects that belief.

Real Estate

I love real estate. My long-term goal is to own my own re-development firm that specializes in rejuvenating communities through the restoration and conversion of historical buildings into repurposed spaces. I hope to use the power of real estate development to better the lives of people and communities.

Economics

Economics has always been an interest of mine and I grew more enamored by the field studying at the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. I particularly enjoy micro-economics because it focuses on what we do everyday: make decisions to allocate limited resources. I find its applications to life in general are limitless.

Film

My interest in film began in High School. I studied film at the Newhouse School at Syracuse University and produced numerous films and videos with classmates. Outside the classroom, I wrote, produced and directed ten marketing videos for International Gaming Company, an online lottery systems company.

Web Design

Studying web-site design at Newhouse blended my existing design mindset with a newly formed marketing mindset. I’ve developed numerous websites, including this one.

Carpentry

I enjoy creating things, and grew up watching my dad build furniture in our basement workshop. I loved helping him and eventually started to build my own furniture. One day I hope to own a home where I have built all the furniture that graces its rooms.

Athletics

I play soccer, volleyball, baseball and football on a regular basis in Philadelphia area leagues. I joined these leagues to keep my body and mind in shape and to have an outlet for my competitive energy; however, socialization is my primary motivation. When not on the field, I am often sharing stories over dinner with my league friends.

STERN

Although I consider myself a well-rounded and accomplished person, I recognize I have more to learn before I’m able to reach my long-term goals. A better understanding of real estate capital markets and international economies will be critical to my success. I believe the best way to fill these gaps is to earn a Stern MBA.
